Visual communication at work.

March 27, 2023 Jade Miller

Visual communication should really be a key focus in the workplace. It can help you simplify complex information and get your point across in a clear and engaging way. When you've got a complex project, a lot of data and details to communicate, visuals like charts, graphs, and images can make all the difference. It’s important to take the time to unpack these complex situations we find ourselves with, and it’s very effective to use drawing, sketching, and visual elements to do this.

It's not just about making things look pretty. Using visuals in presentations and reports can actually improve the quality of your communication. When you capture people's attention with eye-catching visuals, you're more likely to leave a lasting impression and build trust with your audience.

Another thing about visual communication is that it can help break down language barriers, and support neurodiverse brains. We make assumptions about our colleagues that they will understand what we have to say, but if we aren’t proactively attending to multiple needs, it’s likely some messages will get lost in translation. It can be challenging to communicate with colleagues who speak a different language, but with visuals, you can get your point across clearly, across cultures. That means better collaboration, teamwork, and inclusivity in the workplace.

So, if you want to up your communication game, it's time to start incorporating some visuals. Here are a few ways you can start trading words for pictures:

  • Use the graph making function in Excel or Word

  • Use Canva for templates

  • Grab an iPad, Apple Pencil and Procreate, and start sketching - it doesn’t have to be ‘good’!

  • Find free images on Unsplash

  • Talk with a communications expert about ways to visualise your complex projects and work.

I hope this has inspired you to start working more visually!
